A person was indirectly making comments about someone walking ahead of him. The person stopped and asked, “Who are you talking to?” Before the other person could respond, he simply walked away.
When there is no image of yourself inside that can be hurt, no word in the world can truly wound you.
But every word is connected to a memory. Every memory is stored in the mind along with certain patterns. The moment a particular word echoes in the mind, the associated memory arises as well, bringing with it feelings that may be pleasant or painful.
Whether you are aware of your wounds or not, other people often sense them. They notice them through the way you speak, walk, react, and behave. Yet you may spend your whole life feeling hurt, believing that others are the cause of your suffering.

The next time someone calls you dark, fat, short, skinny, ugly, dirty, or uses any other insulting label, do not immediately focus on the person speaking. Instead, look at the image within you that reacts instantly—whether outwardly through anger or inwardly by trying to hide the pain.
Look at the sorrow. Look at the wound that people keep touching again and again.
You may say, “But that image is me.” Yes, absolutely. That image and that wound are what you presently identify as yourself. Therefore, take responsibility for them. Observe that wound carefully, lovingly, without interpreting it or explaining it away. Remain aware of it in the ordinary moments of daily life.
You may not have created this wound yourself, but you do possess the capacity to completely heal and cleanse it.
Rather than repeating phrases such as “I love myself,” “my inner child,” or “let go,” try something different. When someone hurts you with words, observe the wound in that very moment. Watch the movement of the mind that becomes angry, wants to defend itself, wants to answer back, or seeks revenge.
